Solar Pumping Systems

Project Description:

Water pumping with photovoltaics is valuable in livestock production, can assist in conservation management and can be the least expensive alternative to grid extension on windmills in the open spaces of the Western US. In addition many remote homes and ranches have separate water pumping systems for their domestic needs.

Design and implementation of water pumping projects for individual landowners, ranchers, the Nature Conservancy and Rural Electric Cooperatives. Projects vary from providing water for a few cattle to several hundred. Key considerations are well depth, water requirement, water condition, and location. Pumping systems can be trailer mounted to move from well to well. In conservation, water pumping is useful to move livestock out of sensitive habitat around streams, rivers, and lakes.

Applications:
Solar water pumping

Sponsors:
Rural Electric Cooperatives, Rural landowners, Conservation Organizations

Results:

Solar water pumping can provide reliable service. It is particular useful in areas where there is little wind and hot temperatures in which solar output is highest when water demands are greatest. The choice of a good pump is key to getting a reliable system. Many pumps designed for the solar market have had performance and reliability problems and have be carefully evaluated.
