Project Description: |
|
The Central Suriname Nature Reserve in South America is an uninhabited wilderness area of four million acres, an area the size of New Jersey and nearly 10% of the land area of the country of Suriname. This world heritage site is recognized by the United Nations as the most pristine tropical wilderness area in the world.
Conservation International (CI) working with the Suriname Government and Tourism Dept. has developed a conservation based economic development plan for the reserve which includes low impact ecotourism. The focus of ecotourism is an island in the center of the preserve, Foengoe Island which is the only place accessible by both plane and boat. Currently CI is helping build the infrastructure and facilities to accommodate guests, staff, and researchers. The sustainable development plan calls for appropriate technology and renewable energy. Remote Power is under contract to design the solar power systems oversee their installations. |
Applications:
